Everyone has their favorite holiday, I would have to say Cinco de Mayo is mine. I love everything about the Mexican culture; the country, the people, the food, & the margaritas. I grew up playing tennis and turned pro at the age of 17, my very first pro tour was in Mexico. It was my first time out of the country experiencing another a whole new world. I lived down there for a couple of months, just long enough to fall in love with traveling and this country. I visited towns such as Coatzacoalcosalcos, Vera Cruz, Mexico City, and Tampico to name a few. These aren’t your normal touristy towns, so we got to really see how the locals lived.
So needless to say I guess you always remember the first of everything and Mexico stole my heart. Years passed, met my future husband and he proposed to me on Cinco de Mayo. Every year we try and celebrate someplace different for our engagement anniversary. Here is a few pics from the past 3 years.

In honor of Cinco De Mayo and my favorite country, I am choosing Playa del Carmen, Mexico as our Destination of the Day. I love the vibes in this town, it’s fun and so full of life. Also, it is centrally located, you can be to Cozumel by ferry in about 45 min and Cancun is just a short taxi ride.

A group of us showed up a Second time to catch the Senators play Boston. Great service, goods prices and tasty pub food. Any game on any tv and wagering in the back room. Play in Playa!!- Deirdre K TripAdvisor Review
Where to shop?
No siesta time on 5th Avenue, even during holidays such as Christmas and New Years. As a general rule, you can expect things to be open approximately from 10am to 10pm.
US dollars and Pesos are accepted, but be careful rarely do the shops give you back the exchange rate.

What to drink?
Agavero Tequila with Margaritas
Agavero is a unique Tequila liqueur created over a century ago but you should be able to find it at your local liquor store. Our favorite drink at our favorite Mexican restaurant in our town is the Agavero Margarita and this is my version. I love using beer and limeade for margaritas as to me it gives the margaritas a fresh taste, without being over-sweet.
Recipe from the Food Network-
- 1(14 ounce) can frozen limeade concentrate (do not thaw)
- 12ounces Corona beer
- 14ounces tequila (use a good one!)
- 5ounces agavero tequila liqueur
- 9ounces water
- Pour limeade, beer, Agavero, tequila and water, into a large pitcher.
- Stir until well-blended and limeade has melted.
- Add plenty of ice.
- Pour into margarita glasses rimmed with salt (if salt is desired).
- Garnish with lime wedges.
Happy Cinco de Mayo from the Ross’s!
